Car Hire Portugal

Choosing the perfect country to visit is tough enough, but that choice is then narrowed down by trying to select one place within said country to visit. The easiest way around this conundrum is to rent a car at your original destination point, as this opens up a world of travel opportunities for you. If Portugal is your country of choice, there is a better than average chance that Lisbon, the capital city, may well be your point of arrival. It’s easy to find a car hire at the Lisbon Airport, after which you are free to travel as you wish. We will be taking a closer look at Lisbon in this piece, and we will also explore Porto and Faro, a pair of fantastic destinations that are easy to get to via hire car. Before we do that, though, we should probably talk about the driving regulations in Portugal.

If you want to hire a car in Portugal, you will need to be at least 19 years old and be in possession of a valid driver’s license. It should be noted that some types of vehicles require you to be older, so check with the hire car company first. There are plenty of car rental operators in Lisbon, so finding what you want should not be too difficult. You are required to wear a seat belt at all times when you rent a car in Lisbon, and you will be driving on the right side of the road. If you are pulled over, be prepared to pay an on the spot fine to the officer, with payment due in Euros.

Speed limits

speed limits Secondary road portugal

The speed limits will be listed in km/h and are as follows:

  • Motorways – 120 km/h
  • Main Trunk Roads – 100 km/h
  • Built-up Areas – 50 km/h
  • Secondary Roads – 50 km/h

These speed limits are for most cars, but they may be different if you are driving a motorcycle. Lisbon police strictly enforce these speed limits, as they also do with the wearing of seat belts, and driving under the influence. Get to know the layout and controls of your hire car before you hit the road, and also be aware of the main rules and regulations. Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the top travel destinations in Portugal, starting out with Lisbon.
